around the world in 80 eggs, 2022

Designer, Macalester College Advanced Cartography and Geoviz course, ArcGISPro, ArcGISStoryMaps, Adobe Illustrator

In 2021, I took a course called Advanced Cartography and Geovisualization, which was essentially a semester-long, self-guided project in which we could research and visualize any topic of our choosing. I’ve had a lifelong obsession with eggs (although I recently developed an intolerance, sadly), so I chose to visualize a lot of different egg-related data.

I used Taste Atlas data to visualize 20 of the most popular egg-based dishes around the world, surveyed Macalester students and faculty on their preferred cooking methods, used agricultural data to show top producers and consumers of eggs, and I also included facts about commonly paired ingredients, various birds, and egg-centric restaurants. I used ArcGISPro and Adobe Illustrator to complete the printed project, and I also used ArcGISStoryMaps to create an interactive StoryMap with similar content. This course project was my first true experience with data visualization. While I understand the title of “80 Eggs” is misleading, it’s a reference to well-known novel by Jules Verne. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to these design files as they are attached to my expired student accounts, so I am unable to change the title to improve clarity.
